2026 Toyota HiLux Tyre Size: Every Variant Explained

The new-generation Toyota HiLux uses 265/65R17 tyres on the WorkMate 4x4 and SR, and 265/60R18 on the SR5, Rogue and Rugged X. Here is what each size means and how to choose the right replacement for work, touring or the tracks.

The new-generation Toyota HiLux runs on 265/65R17 tyres in WorkMate 4x4 and SR form, while the SR5, Rogue and Rugged X step up to 265/60R18. Both sizes are 265 millimetres wide, so the difference comes down to wheel diameter and how much sidewall sits between the rim and the road.

Toyota's ninth-generation HiLux reached Australian showrooms in December 2025 with a fresh body, a 48-volt mild-hybrid option on higher grades and a reshuffled range. If you have just bought one, or you are planning ahead for the first set of replacements, this guide lays out the factory sizes, explains what the sidewall code is telling you and covers what to look for when the original rubber wears out.

Factory tyre sizes for every 2026 HiLux variant

The table below covers the diesel grades we could confirm. Where a variant is not listed with a size, check the tyre placard on the driver's door jamb before you order.

Cab-chassis and pick-up bodies within the same grade share the same wheel size in the listings we checked, but packs, dealer options and accessory wheels can change things. The placard and the sidewall of the tyre currently on the vehicle are always the final word.

What the HiLux tyre size actually means

A size such as 265/65R17 is three measurements in a row. The first number, 265, is the section width in millimetres, measured across the widest point of the tyre when it is mounted and inflated. The second, 65, is the aspect ratio: the sidewall height expressed as a percentage of that width, so a 65-series sidewall is roughly 172 millimetres tall. The R stands for radial construction, and 17 is the rim diameter in inches.

Run the same sums on 265/60R18 and the sidewall drops to about 159 millimetres, but the larger rim makes up most of the gap. The two sizes end up within a few millimetres of each other in overall diameter, which is why Toyota can fit both across the range without changing the gearing or the speedometer.

After the size you will find a service description: a two- or three-digit load index followed by a speed letter. The load index tells you how much weight each tyre is built to carry, and the letter tells you the maximum speed it is rated for when properly inflated. Some HiLux-sized tyres also carry an LT prefix, which marks a light-truck construction with a stiffer, more puncture-resistant carcass.

Choosing replacement tyres for your HiLux

The safest starting point is the factory size printed on the placard. Stay with 265/65R17 or 265/60R18 and you keep the speedometer, traction control and stability control calibrated the way Toyota intended.

Next, match or beat the load index and speed rating on the placard. A HiLux spends much of its life loaded with tools, a tray full of gear or a caravan on the tow bar, so the load index matters more on a ute than on almost any passenger car. Going higher is fine; going lower is not, and it can create problems with roadworthiness and insurance.

Then pick a terrain type that suits how you actually drive:

  • Highway terrain (H/T): quiet, long-wearing and economical. Ideal for tradies and families who rarely leave the bitumen.
  • All-terrain (A/T): the default choice for most HiLux owners. A balanced tread that handles gravel, sand and dirt tracks while staying civil on the highway. The Landspider WildTraxx A/T and the Keter HyperTrax A/T are both popular options in these sizes.
  • Rugged terrain (R/T): chunkier shoulder blocks and tougher sidewalls for rocky tracks and regular off-road trips, without going all the way to a mud tyre. In LT construction, the Roadboss X5 R/T and the Lanvigator Land Warrior R/T suit owners who want extra bite.
  • Mud terrain (M/T): maximum grip in deep mud and on loose climbs, at the cost of road noise and faster wear on sealed roads.

You can see what we currently stock for your grade by searching 265/65R17 tyres or 265/60R18 tyres. Each listing shows its load index and speed rating, so compare them against your placard before adding a set to the cart. Thinking about going bigger? Read this first

Plenty of HiLux owners want a taller, more aggressive look, and moving up a size is common in the 4WD world. It is worth going in with your eyes open.

  • Speedometer and safety systems: a taller tyre covers more ground per revolution, so the speedo reads low and the electronic aids work from slightly wrong information.
  • Clearance: wider or taller tyres can rub on the inner guards, mud flaps or suspension at full lock or full compression, especially with a load on board.
  • Rules and insurance: each state limits how much a tyre's overall diameter can change before it counts as a modification that needs approval. Check with your state road authority and tell your insurer about any change.
  • Performance and economy: heavier, taller tyres blunt acceleration and braking and usually lift fuel use.

If you do want to change size, talk it through with a local workshop or mobile fitter near you before you buy. Our find a fitter page shows the fitters near you who can fit and balance your new tyres.

Common questions

Do all new HiLux models use the same tyre size?

No. The 17-inch grades, WorkMate 4x4 and SR, use 265/65R17, while the 18-inch grades, SR5, Rogue and Rugged X, use 265/60R18. Always confirm against your placard.

Can I fit 265/65R17 tyres to an SR5 or Rogue?

Only if you also fit 17-inch wheels that suit the HiLux and clear its brakes. A 17-inch tyre will not mount on the factory 18-inch rims.

Are all-terrain tyres a good choice for a new HiLux?

For most owners, yes. A quality all-terrain handles weekend dirt and gravel well while staying comfortable on the highway during the week.

How do I find my exact HiLux tyre size?

Look at the tyre placard on the driver's door jamb, or read the size moulded into the sidewall of the tyres on the vehicle now.
